All 40 torts
A tort is listed when it has active plaintiff litigation in U.S. courts and enough public record to track: a coordinated proceeding, a steady flow of filings, or regulatory and scientific activity around a named product or defendant. Each one sits on a five-step stage track. Individual filings means cases are filed one by one with no coordinated proceeding. Coordinated means cases are centralized before one judge in an MDL or a state JCCP. Bellwethers means test trials are set or under way. Settlement means a global or large-scale deal is proposed, approved or paying. Wind-down means most claims are resolved, dismissed or closed to new filings.
New federal cases counts new dockets filed in the tort's coordinating federal court that name its defendants, from CourtListener's index of PACER. It shows the direction of a docket rather than an official case total.
The Jacob Score, developed by Jacob Malherbe, rates litigation strength from 0 to 100. It combines five dimensions, each rated 1 to 5: science (study quality, size of the risk and agency action), momentum (coordination and filing trend), campaign (whether claims can still be filed and the size of the qualifying population), timeline (distance to bellwether trials or resolution) and verdicts (plaintiff wins and settlement status). A high score means a litigation is proven, not that it is the best place to start. Full methodology

How often is TortIntel updated?
Sources are polled several times a day: news every two hours, federal dockets and FDA recalls every six hours, and FDA labels, the Federal Register and PubMed daily. A tort's page changes only when a new, verified development is found.
Where do the new federal case counts come from?
From CourtListener's index of federal PACER dockets. TortIntel counts new dockets in each tort's coordinating court that name the tort's defendants. Cases filed directly into an MDL master docket or in state court may not appear, so the count shows the trend rather than an official total.
What is the Jacob Score?
A 0 to 100 rating of litigation strength developed by Jacob Malherbe, combining science, momentum, campaign, timeline and verdicts, each rated 1 to 5. It reflects aggregate litigation signals and does not predict any individual case outcome.
